TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Shawnee County residents who mailed in their tag renewals can hope for a bit speedier response.

The county treasurer's office got some helping hands from two state workers on loan from the Department of Revenue, to assist with the backlog.

Problems with a new computer system installed in May have plagued offices statewide, causing long lines in Shawnee County.

Still, for customers waiting in line, it's a slow haul.

Linda Klingensmith arrived at the Shawnee County courthouse at 8:30 a.m. to get her tags renewed. By 10:00 a.m., the office had stopped giving out numbers to new customers.

It's "very quiet, very slow," she said. "I brought a book, so I can read and wait."

Marsha Ralston, the motor vehicle office manager says the temporary workers will ease the pain.

On Monday, the pair was working on mail-in tag renewals.

"Because we do have such a huge amount of mail and I can't take people off the front line to go do the mail, bcause we have so many people coming through the office," Ralston said. "So the added help to get us caught up is going to be greatly appreciated."

Customers say they've had enough of the wait and still don't think there's enough help.

"Seems to me that they should certainly have more than four people in the office taking tags and doing the work and from what I've understood, there's only four people working the counter. And that's ridiculous in Shawnee County," Klingensmith said.

Ralston said the treasurer's office is in the process of adding a couple more staff workers, but they won't be ready and trained until the end of August.

State senator Laura Kelly has requested an audit of the $40 million computer system.

The Kansas Legislative Post Audit Committee will decide Tuesday if a full review will proceed.

The Department of Revenue has extended the grace period for tag renewals. Those with tags expiring June 30 have until July 13 to renew.
