TOPEKA, Kan (WIBW)__Topekans ran for their lives and the lives of others Saturday morning even though the weather was not very
Washburn University hosted the event and 13's own Melissa Brunner was one of the many skilled runners who participated.
They geared up for the rain and hit the pavement to help promote organ and tissue donation awareness
A few runners we talked to said the run was just for fun, but for others like Tonya Knoettgen, the meaning was more personal. "We all participated in this race today to represent our friend and family member... who passed away in 1998. She was a survivor of a double lung transplant. We thought this would be appropriate for us to come out here today to support the organ donation, we all are active participants with organ donation and we encourage everyone to do it as well." Tonya said fighting back tears.
A portion of the proceeds benefited the Topeka Organ Transplant Organization (TOTO) and are administered through the transplant assistance fund.
TOTO is a nonprofit support group for transplant recipients, transplant recipient candidates , living organ donors, and organ donor family members. TOTO designates these funds to provide for those in need of financial assistance from transplant related expenses while striving to educate our community regarding the importance of organ, tissue and bone marrow donation.
