TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A person with local experience seems to be what Topekans want in their next police chief.

Nearly a dozen people spoke up Monday night at a public meeting hosted by city manager Jim Colson. He wanted to get their input as he began the search to replace current chief Ron Miller.

Susan Bernhardt, the mother of officer Jeff Atherly, who was killed in the line of duty said she would like to see someone promoted from within.

"We need someone who's very supportive, like Chief Miller has been," said Bernhardt.

Current Chief Ron Miller has been nominated as the next U.S. Marshal for Kansas.
