TOPEKA, Kan (WIBW) -- A new class of Topeka Police officers will hit the academy in 2012. The decision to re-stock the force came from Topeka City Council members on Tuesday (7/10).
They approved taking $381 thousand from the City's general fund to hire and begin training 20 new Topeka Police officers. It will help fill in the force, that's currently 30 officers down.
The Topeka Police Department is still on track to finish the fiscal year $800-$900 thousand over budget.
Council members will decide how to tackle that shortfall later this year.
The governing body also approved a transient guest tax increase to fund improvements to Sunflower Soccer facilities.
The tax will go from six to seven percent through 2015. The revenue will pay for a restroom, a concession facility, and other infrastructure improvements at the soccer association grounds, at 4829 NW 17th.
Revenue from the tax increase is estimated to be $313 thousand annually. Parking lot improvements and five new soccer fields were also approved.
Council members did not take action on a new Topeka City Manager.
