TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A Democrat has announced he'll mount a challenge to incumbent Republican Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins.
Topeka community leader and pastor Tobias Schlingensiepen said Tuesday that he is forming a committee to run for the 2nd district seat.
Schlingensiepen has served 12 years as a police chaplain. He also leads Topeka's First Congregational Church.
"We have important business here in Kansas and throughout our nation that requires a spirit of hard work and compromise that is currently absent in Washington," he said in a statement announcing his candidacy.
Schlingensiepen says he'll take a leave of absence from his pastoral duties to campaign.
