TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A Topeka man says he's lucky to be alive after getting trapped under his car Wednesday morning (4/4). He credits his life to Topeka City Councilman John Alcala.

Glen Pruitt was working on his '84 Trans Am Wednesday morning when it fell on him. Pruitt is resting now, and coming to terms with his near-death experience.

"I've done this a hundred billion times and I don't know what happened. The ramps should not have come out," Pruitt said.

The veteran mechanic says he's been under cars since he was a kid. He was replacing a fly wheel in the driveway of his home on SE 8th Street, when his Pontiac collapsed on his chest.

"It just felt like someone was sitting on my chest and not being able to breathe, that was the biggest thing."

Glen's wife, Dawn, just happened to come outside at the right time. The sounds of her screams for help reached the house across the street.

Topeka City Councilman John Alcala heard from near the back of his mom's house. He ran over, unlocked the hydraulic jack, and freed Pruitt, who said he'd been pinned for several minutes.

"If my wife had never gotten up out of bed, I hate to think, I would have suffocated out there for sure. There was nothing I could do but lay there," Pruitt said.

Now Pruitt is on the road to recovery, thanking his wife, and Alcala, for his life.

"I love this block here because everybody knows everybody and we're not afraid to help one another."

Pruitt suffered four cracked ribs, and a partially collapsed lung.

Alcala is also battling health issues, something he put on hold to help a neighbor in need.
