TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The body of a Topeka woman was pulled from Lake Shawnee after a four hour search Wednesday night.
Shawnee County Sheriff Herman Jones said Latonya Merriweather, 28, was last seen at approximately 7:10 p.m. swimming near the heated dock with friends. Witnesses saw her go under water, but she never resurfaced. Jones said they attempted to rescue her, but were unable to find Latonya.
The Shawnee County Park Police Officers, Shawnee Heights Fire Department and Kansas Wildlife and Parks assisted in the search using boats equipped with sonar.
Kansas Wildlife & Parks personnel found Latonya's body in an area close to where she was last seen at about 11:20 p.m.
The preliminary investigation indicates Merriweather died from accidental drowning.
