Topeka, Kan. (WIBW) - The Topeka Police Department is wanting to warn people of a new scam.
The callers report receiving a telephone call by a person who says they are a representative of a collections agency. The person demands the caller's social security number to "clear up" money that they stated was owed to the agency.
The person on the other end also says that they would have the person arrested for refusing to give this information.
The police say under no circumstances should anyone give out their social security number to anyone over the phone, no matter what. They also say the threat of arrest for owing money is also fake..
Anyone contacted and asked to give out their social security number or other personal information should refuse the request and hang up on the caller.
