AURORA, Colo. (WIBW) - One man from Topeka says he never thought he would be so close to the shooting massacre that happened Friday in Aurora, Colo.
Washburn Rural graduate Michael Atha got his medical degree from the University of Kansas in 2002, and works at the Aurora Medical Center where victims are being treated.
"I think the local community is still in a bit of shock trying to process the enormity of what happened," he told 13 News by phone. "Here at the hospital, people are more focused on taking care of the patients that have come in and trying to provide them the best care possible."
He said he moved to Aurora three years ago and loved the area.
"[The] Aurora, Colorado area is generally viewed as a safe place. Certainly something like this happening anywhere is a shock...maybe more so in this area," he said.
