Many northeast Kansans answered the call to make Monday's Martin Luther King Junior holiday a day of service.

Topeka's Harvesters location was among them.

Volunteers were invited to learn about the face of poverty in the Topeka area. They then got to work, loading backpacks for the organization's "Back Snack" program. The backpacks will be sent home with students in need, so they have healthy foods to eat over the weekend.

Jannett Wiens of Harvesters said the program gave people who had the day off from work to spend the "day on," addressing a social issue facing the community. In this case, she said, the issue was hunger.

Participants also were invited to build a Dream Tree and share how they would work to end hunger throughout the rest of the year.
