Topeka Fire Assists With Fire At Frito Lay Facility

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Frito Lay is adding up the damage from a Wednesday evening fire.

Topeka Fire Department officials say their crews were called to the plant just after 6:30 pm to assist with a fire in the plant's Biomass boiler building. They say Frito Lay crews spent about a half hour fighting it themselves before calling for assistance.

The fire was contained to the power area, which is a separate building from the rest of the manufacturing facility. Fire officials say production was not impacted.

Fire officials say crews used pre-connected water lines to keep the fire confined to the boiler fuel hopper system. The boiler uses recycled organic product, such as wood chips, to heat the oil used in manufacturing snack chips. The hopper system holds the organic waste used to fuel the boiler.

Topeka Fire crews spent two hours at the scene. Four engine companies, three truck companies, a shift commander, a battalion chief and a fire investigator all responded. No one was hurt.

The extent of damage was not known Wednesday night.
