TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - One local church celebrated the national day of prayer and gathered to pray for our nation and leaders.

Central Park Christian Church hosted one of more than 35,000 gatherings Thursday to pray for our country.

The Senior Pastor says it's so important to recognize this day, especially with all the tragedy that has occurred in our country and city.

"There's something that happens when tragedy hits the nation. It seems like we always cry out to God, but it doesnt take very long before we forget about God and kind of shove him to the side," said Senior Pastor Tim Maddock. "So it's important. Something that raises awareness of our need for God and that's why I think its important."

National Day of Prayer is a time for all religions to come together to pray.
