TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)___Topekans now know the maximum amount their property taxes could go up next year.
Topeka City Council members tonight approved financial advisor Jeff White's proposal of a mill levy cap that sits nearly 11 mills higher than 2013.
Council members Sylvia Ortiz., John Campos and Richard Harmon opposed it.
The vote doesn't mean taxes will go up that much, it merely sets a ceiling as council members talk through options for closing a projected gap of $5.65 million.
City Manager Jim Colson has recommended a combination of department funding cuts and raising taxes and fees.
Council members also discussed the possibility of holding two meetings a month instead of four, with work sessions the other two weeks. No decision was made.
