Topeka, Kan. (WIBW) - Since Memorial Day is the unofficial kick off to summer, The Propane Marketers Association of Kansas has released tips to keep you safe when grilling.

Make sure to read and follow the manufacturer's instructions before turning on and lighting the grill. Keep the lid open until you are sure the grill is lit.

Turn off the burner control and close the cylinder valve. When the grill is not in use for an extended period of time, cover disconnected hose-end fittings with plastic bags or protective caps to keep them clean.

Replace the igniter in accordance with the manufacturer's instruction if it no longer works.

Store propane cylinders in an up right position outside.

If you smell gas, and it is safe to do so, turn the cylinder valve to the right to turn it off. If you cannot turn it off, leave the area immediately and call 911 or the local fire department. Have a qualified service technician inspect the grill before you use it again.

Make sure to consult a qualified technician if you are having any problems with the grill or the propane cylinder.
