Thousands Without Power Due To Overnight Storm

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A lightning-laden thunderstorm rolled through northeast Kansas early Wednesday morning, bringing with it a lightning strike that hit a Westar Energy transformer near 6th & Wanamaker Road in Topeka.

The hit knocked out power to 1,194 Westar customers, including WIBW Studios, at about 4 a.m.

In Lyon County, 743 customers were without power at 4:30 a.m. Our radio partner in Emporia, KVOE, reported that Newman Regional Health lost power and had to begin operating on a generator shortly before 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Lyon County is one of the areas watching the rainfall as well because of flooding from the Cottonwood River during the past week.

At 5:48 a.m., Westar reported 1,277 Shawnee County customers without power. According to the energy company's website, the estimated restore time for power there is 8 a.m.

The Lyon County number was down to 297 at 5:48 a.m.
