TOPEKA, Kan. -- Thousands of Topekans will spend a ‘night out against crime’ on Saturday, August 11. This year, over 15,500 communities throughout the nation will participate in the 29th annual 'America's Night Out Against Crime' which is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) in partnership with Target.

In 2011, NATW honored Topeka with a Top Ten national ranking (in cities of its size) for excellence in planning and community involvement.

Locally, Safe Streets, the Topeka Police Department, the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Office of the District Attorney will provide financial and organizational support for approximately sixty neighborhood celebrations. Block parties, cookouts, ice cream socials, and parades are but a few of many activities planned to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships during this celebration.

Members of the Topeka Police Department, Sheriff’s Office, and City/County/State governments will fan out across the city and county to attend these many celebrations and to remind the citizens that law enforcement alone cannot be the sole provider of safety and security in a community. Citizen involvement and participation are instrumental in addressing crime and crime prevention in Topeka and Shawnee County.

The Topeka Police Department will officially begin the celebration at 5:00 pm on August 11, 2012, with a reception at the Law Enforcement Center. This reception is sponsored by the Citizens Academy Ambassadors. Participants will then board a bus and travel to various celebrations throughout the city. Seats are still available on the bus; contact Ben Clay at 368-9237 or bclay@topeka.org for more information.
