TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- The White House says it can not fulfill a request to deem the Westboro Baptist Church a hate group.

The administration received petitions through the White House website wanting to label WBC a hate group and revoke its tax exempt status.

Nearly 700,000 people signed five related petitions. The group has come under fire over the years for protesting funerals of soldier's killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The White House doesn't maintain a list of hate groups, but a map of where the petition signers come from shows a high density in Kansas and Connecticut.
