TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) -- Like many others, the busiest time of the year for the Salvation Army is the holiday season. The Topeka Salvation Army is encouraging the community to help out with its biggest fundraisers for the needy.
The biggest volunteer opportunity is the annual Red Kettle Campaign. Volunteers can ring bells at one of the 37 kettle sites around Topeka with two-hour shifts Monday through Saturday. The kettle goal is $200,000 this year.
The Angel Tree program provides toys and clothing for registered children on distribution day. Volunteers can man the table by Sears at West Ridge Mall from December 3 to December 7. Shifts run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Volunteers will provide information about the Angel Tree program, greet shoppers, help select an angel, register the donor and accept unwrapped gifts for the selected angels.
Volunteers are also needed for the Toy Shop setup and food box packing. Those activities take place December 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Lastly, the Salvation Army needs help on distribution day. Volunteers will help escort registered clients through the process of picking up food boxes and/or toy selection. Friendly, passionate people are encouraged to volunteer.
