A man convicted of a Topeka murder had his appeal heard by the Kansas Supreme Court.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- A man convicted of a Topeka murder had his appeal heard by the Kansas Supreme Court.

James Qualls was convicted of first degree for the death of 30-year old Joseph Beier.

Beier was shot and killed in July of 2008,inside the Whiplash Bar at 21st and California.

Qualls turned himself in to authorities in Kansas City two weeks later.

Qualls argues jurors should have been able to consider an alternative charge of voluntary manslaughter,as well as self-defense.

Justices won't make a decision for several weeks.
