TOPEKA -- The Kansas Historical Society hosted a baseball and softball picture collecting event Tuesday, and hit a home run right off the bat with its effort to see some of the area's most interesting pictures of baseball and softball teams.
People were invited to the lobby of the Kansas Museum of History. One participant brought in an authentic Mickey Mantle photo when the star baseball player played in a Baxter Springs Summer League at the age of 16. Roger Yocom says he found the Mickey picture folded up in a box that his mother told him to go through, or get rid of a long time ago, when he returned from serving in the military.
The event encouraged people to donate or loan photographs from both organized play and sandlot pickup games. They'll be scanned into one of the Historical Society's most popular websites, KansasMemory.org.
The Shawnee County Baseball Hall of Fame, which launched this spring, and is a virtual online website, helped organize the event.
