TOPEKA, Kan (WIBW)__ Topeka Police Department volunteers were honored during Tuesday's annual volunteer appreciation dinner.
Volunteers In Police Service, or VIPS, come from all different backgrounds and are looking to be involved in the community.
86-year-old Robert Friesen and 82-year-old Harry Rupple received lifetime achievement awards. Both were in the first class of volunteers to be trained.
Three people received presidential gold pins, 44 received silver service pins and 43 received bronze appreciation pins as well.
In 2011, volunteers donated 18-thousand hours to helping the community.
