TOPEKA, Kan (WIBW)__ A somber memorial service was held Saturday for the man who lost his life in a gunfight one century ago.

A memorial service was held for Topeka Police Patrolman Caswell S. Mathews at Prairie Home Cemetery...

Matthews died in a gunfight on may 5, 1912. Men robbed the Bonner Springs City Marshal, then took a train to Topeka, where Matthews was waiting.

When Matthews questioned the men, one of them opened fire. Matthews was hit, but returned fire, wounding one of the assailants. Matthews died the next day but both suspects were later captured.

Matthews' great great grand kids attended the memorial service.
