TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ Two bedraggled pianos and an electric organ didn't stand a chance.

To raise money, a men's music fraternity at Washburn University in Topeka invited students to beat them with a sledgehammer Thursday on the Memorial Union lawn. Taking a swing at the aging instruments didn't cost, but donations were encouraged.

The Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Colony is still counting the loot. But senior music performance major Nick Scott estimates the event will raise around $200.

After the Washburn chapter fell by the wayside in the 1990s, the national fraternity allowed it to reform this spring. The chapter's still in a probationary period that allows the national group to pull the plug if there are problems.

Members are planning an all-American composer concert. They also perform at nursing homes and hospitals.
