Steam Locomotive Rolls Through Topeka

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A steamy blast from the past is rolling through the Capital City.

Union Pacific's Locomotive #844 is spending the night in Topeka. It pulled into North Topeka's Great Overland Station Monday afternoon. T he train is making its way through many different states to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the UP railroad.

#844 is the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific railroad in 1944. The engine was saved from scrap in 1960 and has been used since as a "special service" locomotive.

Engineer and manager of Heritage Equipment Ed Dickens says seeing one operate is very impressive.

"The reaction it gets from everybody is always one of surprise but it's not every day that you can see a locomotive like this operate," Dickens said. "When you see one in a museum, it's impressive, but when you see one actually operating and to hear that whistle, it really is a head turner."

The train will leave Topeka at 8 am Tuesday, headed for Council bluffs, Iowa. The train's progress is tracked at
