TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Woodward and Awl buildings on the former Topeka State Hospital grounds have been sold.

The State Finance Council voted Thursday to approve selling the buildings to Stormont-Vail Health Care. Stormont will pay $950,000 for the property.

Gov. Sam Brownback says the sale was part of an effort lawmakers launched a couple years ago, to categorize just how much land the state actually owns.Brownback says the list includes pages of properties - some very small - so he hopes this isn't the only sale the council will authorize.

"My hope is we can do a number of these that the state no longer needs the property or we can consolidate pieces of state government - where we have three pieces of property in a community, get into one and sell the other two pieces off," he said.

Stormont says it is still evaluating how they'll use the buildings. Last December, Stormont paid Topeka Public Schools $675,000 for 10.3 acres of the district's Kanza Science and Education Park, also on the former state hospital grounds, to establish a career pathway for students to explore health care careers.
