TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ A 91-year-old Kansas inmate convicted in a botched murder-for-hire is asking to be paroled from his life sentence.

But Joseph Johnson will have to overcome the objections of Matt Patterson, a Shawnee County prosecutor who calls the facts of Johnson's case as chilling as anything he has seen.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/MNDqk1 ) Johnson was hired in 1992 by a Topeka man seeking someone to kill his estranged wife. Johnson gave the job to a 16-year-old boy, who went to an apartment and fatally shot a man who opened the door.

But the ex-wife had moved out of the apartment, and the shooting victim was a new tenant.

Johnson was denied parole in 2009. He's held at the El Dorado prison and is scheduled to meet with the parole board next month.
