MARION COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- New details are emerging following a deadly head-on collision in Marion County involving a military family. Troopers have confirmed that a Fort Riley soldier is the only member of his family who survived the accident.

Kansas Highway Patrol reports indicate that on Friday, August 10th, 2012 at 11:43 AM, a car driven by Bryan Alfred, 21, of Junction City, was southbound on US Highway 56 (four miles south of Herington) when his vehicle went left of center and struck a Chevy Silverado going northbound. Alfred’s Nissan entered a ditch and overturned. The truck came to rest in the roadway.

Fort Riley officials confirm that Alfred is a specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to the 101st Brigade Support Battalion, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team of the 1st Infantry Division. He was listed in serious condition at Saint Francis Hospital in Wichita after being airlifted there after the accident. Hospital officials say he has since been released.

His wife, 20-year-old Amber Alfred, was ejected from the car and killed in the crash. The couple’s 2-year-old son, Josiah Alfred, also died.

Another child, six-year-old Keith Johnson, who police also identified as the couple’s son (Bryan Alfred's stepson), was also airlifted to Saint Francis Hospital in Wichita and was listed in critical condition in the days following the accident. He passed away from his injuries six days after the crash on August 16th, 2012 at 4:55 AM.

It is unknown where the military family was going at the time of the deadly rollover.

Four passengers in the Chevy Silverado received what officials referred to as “limited” injuries. Troopers believe one of the occupants suffered a broken ankle. They were treated and released from Herington Hospital.

What caused Bryan Alfred to cross over into oncoming traffic remains unknown. An official accident report from the Kansas Highway Patrol headquarters office in Topeka should be available in upcoming weeks.

Marion County Attorney Susan Robson said she had no comment when asked if Alfred could face any charges in the crash. She said she has not received any official reports on the accident.
