TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A crime strategy briefing at the Topeka Police Department Wednesday afternoon started with some special announcements.
Chief Ron Miller offered promotions to six officers, beginning with the promotion of Patrick Ladd to detective and working his way up to naming a second deputy chief for the police force.
Division Commander Tony Kirk was promoted to lieutenant colonel and will serve as deputy chief, alongside current deputy chief Col. Walt Wywadis. Wywadis is retiring in June, Miller said, but the TPD will not have a second deputy chief to budget constraints.
Peggy Fox was promoted to major and will serve as the new division commander for the West Topeka patrol division.
Jennifer Cross was promoted to sergeant, Thomas Glor to captain and Jack Mackey to lieutenant.
Friends, family and fellow officers packed the room at the Law Enforcement Center to applaud the announcements.
The promotions take affect April 28.
Miller said they are all well deserved but due to budget constraints are only being filled because of the ripple effect stemming from deputy chief Wywadis' upcoming retirement.
