Shots Fired At Police In Northeast Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. KAKE-TV reports shots were fired at police around 1:30 A.M. near the area of 17th and Estelle. This is near Northeast Magnet High School and Westmoreland Park.

Officers were called to a disturbance on North Estelle Street and upon arriving, they were fired at. Five-to-seven shots were fired at the officers.

Officers immediately took cover and started to secure the area. Five people had to be evacuated from their homes and anyone else in the area was told to shelter in place.

There were no injuries as a result of this gunfire.

There was one arrest, but it was for the original disturbance police were called to and not related to the shooting. The shooter is still on the loose.

The area around 17th and Estelle was on lock down for nearly two hours and police are still investigating the scene.

Police say more information will be released at a daily media briefing later this morning.
