Shooting Victim's Friends Wreck Car Outside E.R.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Slick road conditions from the rain appear to have caused a driver to crash near a Topeka hospital emergency room while the driver was following a friend who'd been shot.

Topeka Police Lt. Mackey said Sunday morning (8/26) that a car carrying the gunshot victim showed up at about 4 a.m. to the St. Francis E.R. His friends were in a car behind the vehicle he was in, following him to the hospital. The driver of that car, Mackey said, was apparently driving too fast through the intersection of 6th & Garfield, and hydroplaned into a road sign.

Lt. Mackey said the passengers of the car had bumps and bruises, but all refused medical treatment.

The gunshot victim reportedly had minor injuries after being shot in the backside. Officers say all the men were uncooperative in their investigation of how, when and where the shooting took place.

Detectives did investigate a possible crime scene at 7th & Gilmore, but say they didn't find shell casings or any other sign the shooting happened there. They also processed the vehicle the victim arrived at the hospital in, and released it Sunday morning.

Anyone with information on what happened can call Crime Stoppers at (785) 234-0007.
