Shawnee County DMV Mess Continues

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -The problems continue in Shawnee County with tag renewals and registration. State revenue officials say most of the counties have the new system under control.

Johnson, Geary and Shawnee counties have been stuck with recurring issues. Geary seems to be on its way off the list but Shawnee County's long lines could be around a while. The state feels it is due to preparation but office manager Marsha Ralston points to glitches.

While explaining what happens during the renewal process, Marsha says, "Were going through a transaction smoothly and all the sudden a box pops up that says error and you can't go any farther."

State officials believe the problem could have a little more to do with preparation steps shawnee county chose to ignore.

Public information officer with the Kansas Department of Revenue, Jeannine Koranda says, "Of the 54 weeks of training we offered, Shawnee County participated in 20, and so they were far behind when they started. We offered additional training and services but each time they turned us down.

In may the state provided extentions on renewals and registrations due to percieved glitches with the new 40 million dollar system but right now officials say those due in june will receive no such luck.

Koranda says, "If we were to do that people will wait until the last minute to do it and if we extend June, it would increase the problem going forward and you wouldn't get over it.

Geary County was once jam packed and full of frustrated customers like Shawnee County but recently are now running smoothly.

Kathy Tremont, Geary County treasurer offers a bit of advice to those frustrated and can speak from experience, saying, "We all started at the same time and it will get better. As you can see we've gone from a full room of people to a bare minimum."

The state says technicians were out to look at Shawnee County systems a few days ago and are willing to provide any assistance needed to work out the problems if the county asks for assistance.
