TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Kansas Court of Tax Appeals has overruled a decision that a Shawnee County mansion is worthless.
In October 2012, the Kansas Board of Tax Appeals ruled that a new home at SW 53rd and Urish was uninhabitable.
The Shawnee County Appraisers Office appealed and in a decision issued Friday, the Kansas Court of Tax Appeals sided with the county.
Its ruling says the property, owned by Daniel and Peggy Bailey, is worth more than $565,000.
The owner claimed water leaks and structural issues made the property worthless.
But the court accepted the finding of a second engineer, who found even though the house has defects, it still has value in the fair market.
With the finding, the 2011 property tax bill for the home is now almost $17,000.
