TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A Kansas Senator moved to the head of the class Thursday.

Sen. Pat Roberts dropped in at Jay Shideler Elementary School for story time. The Senator read "Nubs - The True Story of a Mutt, a Marine and a Miracle" to a group of third graders.

Roberts served in the Marines himself.

Roberts said the school visit wasn't about politics, but he does encourage the kids' moms and dads and older siblings to make sure they're reading the upcoming election ballot. He says it is an important election and people should not sit on the sidelines, not matter which side of the political aisle they fall.

Roberts listed the drought and the farm bill among issues lawmakers must address in Washington.

Incidentally, the story Roberts read of the Marine and his dog, rescued from Iraq, is in the process of being made into a movie.
