TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)__Senate Democratic Leader Anthony Hensley did not agree with the Governor's two year budget and sees Brownback as irresponsible.
Senator Hensley released this statement, saying, “Sam Brownback has shown a genuine lack of leadership this session by
allowing the Republican legislature to run amuck in passing the most
irresponsible budget in recent years.
“He toured the state claiming he would hold higher education harmless, but
neglected to engage in the process to see this through. Now, he has signed
a budget that contains a two-year $66 million cut – the largest cut to
higher education in the history of Kansas.
“These cuts will reduce salary funding at all Regents institutions and
cause tuition increases for students. Kansas students deserve an affordable
education provided by highly qualified faculty and staff. They certainly
won’t get that with Brownback’s budget.
“The budget also cuts funding to the Kansas Department of Corrections for
fiscal year 2014, including adult and juvenile correctional facilities, and
transfers $9.5 million from the Children’s Initiative Fund, which was to be
used for early childhood education.
“Sam Brownback has signed a budget that will result in cutting jobs
essential to our state institutions and raising tuition on our students,
all for pursuing his reckless “glide path to zero” income tax.
Unfortunately, this is only the beginning. I predict many more cuts to
