JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (WIBW) -- An accident in a Junction City roundabout left quite a mess for crews to clean up after a semi truck carrying 60,000 lbs. of trash tipped over on its way to the landfill.

It happened at 10:15 Wednesday morning in the 800 block of East Chestnut Street near Exit 296 for I-70.

Officials at the scene tell 13 News that they believe the driver of the tractor trailer went through the roundabout too quickly, forcing the load to shift in the trailer, the truck to roll over onto its side and tons of trash to spill out.

The trailer on the truck was completely filled with trash. According to officials, it had just left the Geary County Transfer Station where local garbage trucks dump all of the area trash before it is hauled to a landfill in Topeka.

The driver of the truck was taken to Geary Community Hospital with minor injuries. Firefighters who responded to the accident say he able to get out of the truck under his own power after it tipped over.

Workers from Junction City and Geary County had to clear out most of the trash before the truck could be up righted and removed from the roundabout.

Gross Wrecker handled the crash and thanked Veolia Water, Public Works, the Geary County Sheriff's Office and the Junction City Police Department for their help in cleaning up after the accident.
