Second Westar Falcon Chick Found Dead

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - It was a sad discovery Tuesday for the second peregrine falcon chick born atop Westar Energy's building this spring.

Westar reports the young bird they'd named "Edison" was found dead on the rooftop. They say it appears he suffered a fatal neck injury during an unsuccessful flight attempt.

A second male chick fell from the nest box to its death last month. In the wake of that incident, and a similar death of a chick last spring, Westar said it planned to review the design of its nest box to prevent falls next season.

Westar says the mortality rate of young falcons is higher than 50 percent. Peregrines may typically live to be 12 to 15 years old.

Westar says it's hopeful for a more successful season next year for parents, Nemaha and Boreas.
