TOPEKA, Kan. – Beginning January 14, the Sardou Bridge linking the North Topeka and Oakland neighborhoods will be closed for about 10 to 12 weeks for repair and maintenance to the support structure under the deck.

The detour for westbound Sardou at the east end of the bridge will be River Road, to E. First Street, to Kansas Avenue (NE Quincy on the north end of the bridge), to NE Morse Street. The eastbound detour will be the reverse.

An open house explaining details of the project is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, December 20, at the Oakland Community Center, 801 NE Poplar Avenue, located about three blocks east from the east end of the bridge. Engineers from the City and the project consulting firm will be on hand to answer questions.

The bridge, originally built in 1961, is in need of new “rockers” (the piece between a girder and pier or abutment) and abutment work. The work is not temperature-dependent but is weather dependent in regard to precipitation.

Wildcat Concrete Services is the contractor in charge of the $500,000 project.
