Riley County Police are investigating a potential scam taking place in the area.
Police reported Tuesday the possibility of people posing as Westar Energy employees over the phone. Officials say several residents in the area have been contacted by callers claiming they owe money to the company. The victims are then asked to provide financial information in order to make the payment.
The public is being reminded to ask questions in these circumstances in order to verify the information and reduce the risk of falling victim to the scam.
Individuals receiving these calls should contact their local energy provider to verify their account status.
