MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- A new marketing campaign is helping advertise Manhattan and the surrounding areas as a desirable retirement destination.

The Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce is encouraging local businesses to display window clings and other materials for their push, encouraging people to retire to the Flint Hills. Each also has a QR Tag that connects to the Chamber website.

Officials say they’ve had great success with their nine-year campaign promoting retirement to the region but the chamber and the Retire to the Flint Hills Committee wanted to give the project a new, updated look.

“College towns are very attractive for people to retire to. There’s always so much to do- sports, cultural events, etc,” said John Pagen, Vice President for Economic Development for the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce.

“I went to a retirement seminar several years ago and they said the one sure way to waste all of your money was to do a blanket campaign of the whole country to people who have never even heard of your community. We’re really targeting people who lived in Manhattan or know about Kansas- K-State alums, Manhattan High alums, people who know the area, military who are transitioning out who lived here and obviously enjoy it and want to stay for the next phase of their career,” Pagen added.

The area has been voted one of the "10 Best Places to Retire Young" by Money Magazine. SmartMoney.com, part of the Wall Street Journal’s network, has placed it on their list of the "Top Underrated Retirement Havens."

If your business would like to display these materials, please contact John Pagen at the Chamber at 776-8829 or johnp@manhattan.org.
