TOPEKA, Kan. -- The greater Topeka community rallied to support Tornado Tuesdays, raising more than $2,400.

Eight local restaurants united for a common cause to help the residents of Harveyville, Kan. recover from the devastating effects of an F-2 tornado. The tornado, which struck during the evening hours of February 28, damaged more than 40 percent of the small community. Sixteen homes were completely destroyed, and one person was killed.

For the Tornado Tuesday fundraising campaign, restaurants agreed to give 10 percent of all food sales for one Tuesday in May or June. Funds raised were donated to United Way’s long-term recovery work in Harveyville. To date, United Way has committed more than $14,000 to meet the needs of tornado victims through long-term recovery work. Funds are applied for by residents after exhausting all other resources such as insurance, savings or loans. The long-term recovery team, which is comprised of representatives from community agencies, churches and United Way, is a last resort to help families get back to life as it was before the tornado.

Thank you to the participating restaurants and the community!
