TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- The cold weather also brings a greater need for blood donors.
To help meet it, the Sertoma Clubs of Topeka sponsored a community blood drive at St. David's Episcopal Church.
The Community Blood Center says it needs to collect 580 units a day to keep up with demand and organizers say that can be a challenge when cold weather makes it difficult for regular donors to get out.
"There's still going to be a need even though it's cold out, but you know you can tough out the cold weather and come out and donate so that we can keep an adequate supply to help the patients in need," Leann Delong Community Blood Center.
In addition to saving lives, blood donors were also eligible to win prizes if they donate.
