TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- Volunteers at the Topeka Rescue Mission are working hard to bring Christmas cheer this season.
They've spent the last few days handing out red and green gift bags to hundreds of area families that registered through the Christmas bureau. Despite the fact that donations are down this year, the mission hasn't turned anyone away. Volunteers say it's a great time to give back to the community.
"I've been here for 12 years and just been one of the most rewarding and exciting jobs that I've had," said Mark "Santa Claus" Shinkle. "I can't imagine doing anything else right now. It means a lot to me. It means a lot to our staff, just to be able to help and there's a lot of need's right now."
The Topeka Rescue Mission has distributed gifts and food boxes to more than 500 families this year.
