TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Topeka Rescue Mission is working to accommodate the increase in homelessness around the Capital City.

The Rescue Mission kicked off its fundraising campaign Tuesday for a new intake center on NE Quincy. The $3 million renovation to the old Bailey Moving and Storage building will allow for an additional 170 beds to relieve overcrowding at the mission's main North Topeka location.

Rescue Mission Executive Director Barry Feaker says the new intake center won't only address the issue of homelessness.

"It will help us to create a place that's more of an intake or like the emergency room in a hospital where people can come for that basic emergency care when they're homeless and really don't need a long term program, but, if they do, then it's going to enable us to go further with our existing facilities in creating that educational opportunity and long term shelter," Feaker explained.

The new intake center will have about 90 more beds for women and children as well as a laundry and shower facility. It also will have space for complementing service organizations to each the people in the mission.

The Mission initially purchased a former Schmidt Builders warehouse building for the expansion last year. However, Feaker said the Bailey building had long been the first choice for the expansion. It is directly behind the Mission's main facilities, meaning guests will not have to walk across railroad tracks for meals and other services.

Feaker says the Mission still has a need for the warehouse building as a location to store and distribute food and other items.

Donations to assist the renovation and expansion effort may be directed to the Topeka Rescue Mission.
