SALINE CO., Kan. (WIBW) - A Kansas Highway Patrol trooper was injured and a Saline County community put under lockdown Tuesday night following a shootout with a bank robbery suspect.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says the suspect was apprehended without further incident just before 9:30 pm.
The incident began unfolding near the town of Assaria about three hours earlier, just after 6:30 pm.
Kansas Highway Patrol Lt. Josh Kellerman says a trooper tried to pull over a vehicle matching the description of one linked to a bank robbery in the Rice County town of Chase Tuesday morning.
The driver led the trooper on a chase, eventually crashing the car. Kellerman says the suspect then got out and exchanged gunfire with the trooper.
Kellerman says the trooper was not shot, but was injured by glass the bullets shattered. The suspect then ran. Authorities warned people in Assaria to stay indoors while they searched for the suspect.
There are reports a woman who was in the vehicle with the suspect was shot. Kellerman could not confirm that. He also said it was unclear what the relationship might be between the suspect and other people who were in the vehicle.
