Religious Freedom Rally Draws Thousands to State Capital

STATEHOUSE (From 13 News) -- Triple digit heat didn't stop thousands of religious freedom supporters from flooding to the state capitol steps this afternoon.

Governor Brownback called it the largest rally he's ever seen at the statehouse.

The event was part of a nationwide campaign ignited by a mandate announced by President Obama earlier this year requiring most employers to provide health insurance covering birth control.

Rally supporters fear the policy is a first step in taking away their religious rights.

Rally supporter Mike Dixon said "I dont believe our government should tell us we have to support something that we find morally objectionable."

"We must stand up and let people know that were opposed to government taking away our religious freedom," said Cathryn Radiel.

President Obama said the mandate would include a religious exemption for houses of worship but bishops nationwide were unsatisfied with the change.
