TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Volunteers and workers of the American Red Cross Kansas Capital Area Chapter are being placed on alert again as a second winter storm approaches.

Red Cross Offices across kansas are busy contacting volunteers, evaluating possible shelter scenarios and closely monitoring how the weather could impact Kansas families.

Red Cross officials will be in contact with local emergency management to determine if and when to respond. The Red Cross is is ready to respond should communities face extended power outages or if a large number of travelers become stranded.

They encourage everyone to be ready for any storm with these tips:
-Winterize your vehicle and make sure your gas tank is full. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing.
-Stay off roads when possible to allow emergency management and other agencies to plow roads and keep them clear for emergencies.
-Insulate your home by installing storm windows. You can also cover them with plastic from the inside to keep the cold air out.
-Use space heaters and generators safely and make sure to follow instructions provided by the manufacturer.
-Make sure your supply kit is stocked with food, water, flashlight, battery or hand crank radio, first aid kit, medications, cell phone and charger, baby and pet supplies, tools, extra cash, sand, salt or non-clumping kitty litter to make walkways and steps less slippery, and warm coats, hats gloves, and extra blankets for all household members.
-Help people who require special assistance such as elderly people living alone, people with disabilities and children. Also make sure they are prepared for the storm.
-Protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia by wearing warm, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in several layers.
-Stay indoors if possible.
