Emporia, KS, January 16, 2012 — The Red Cross Kansas Capital Area Chapter volunteers are preparing to hit the streets of Emporia for the organization's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Caring.

The one-day volunteer driven activity will take place Monday, January 21 this year and will have one main goal: to increase fire prevention and awareness in the City of Emporia.

"Our volunteers will canvas high risk neighborhoods in Emporia," said Debra Tucker, Regional Volunteer Coordinator for the Kansas Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross, "The event raises awareness to the number one disaster, home fires."

Volunteers will hang information on doors of homes and apartments, but also educate the public at the same time about how to prevent home fires, give safety tips, and answer questions about fire safety.

If you are interested in volunteering with the Red Cross in Emporia, call Debra Tucker at 785-235-0568 or email Debra.Tucker@redcross.org.
