TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -Press Release:
On Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at approximately 1910 hours the Shawnee County Emergency Dispatch Center received a 911 call advising of a drowning near the heated dock at Lake Shawnee. Members of the Shawnee Heights Fire Department, American Medical Response, Shawnee County Park Police, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call.
Upon arrival first responders learned that a female in her late 20’s was in the water close to the heated dock. Witnesses saw her go under water and never resurface.
Members of the Shawnee Heights Fire Department Dive Team entered the water and conducted searches. The Shawnee County Park Police Officers, Shawnee Heights Fire Department and Kansas Wildlife and Parks are assisting the search using boats equipped with sonar.
At the time of this media release first responders have not recovered the victim. The female’s name is being withheld at this time pending notification of family members. Her information will be released at a later time tomorrow, August 23rd, 2012.
Sheriff Jones has said the search will resume at first light Thursday morning.
