TOPEKA KAN. (WIBW)-- 51 organizations and over 6,000 participants are banning together to stop crime in their neighborhoods. This is a record high for participation in Topeka and Shawnee County. Neighborhood Night Out Against Crime received the 2010 National Night Out Award from the National Association of Town Watch. It's the fifth year they're received the recognition. The goal is to heighten crime prevention by strengthening neighborhood spirit and police to community partnerships.

“Neighbors meeting neighbors in order to prevent crime. It's for you to know who your neighbor is and they'll watch out for you. We have very little crime because we're caring about each other," said volunteer coordinator Jeff Imparato.

The program asks simple gestures like calling your neighbor if they left their pet out or garage door up, all in hopes of preventing crime.

You can participate in night out against crime this Saturday, August 6th, from 4-7 at Apostolic Church of Jesus. There you can learn what's happening in your neighborhood.
