TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A fire sent flames shooting into the skies and disrupted train traffic through North Topeka Monday night.
Crews were called around 8 pm to what was initially described as the 800 block of North Kansas Avenue. Witness reported seeing large flames coming from the area. The location was determined to be under the north end of the Kansas Avenue Bridge, along the railroad tracks.
Crews say railroad ties caught fire. Since they were located near the tracks and with fire equipment across the tracks, rail traffic was shut down as a precaution.
No buildings suffered any damage.
Fire crews remained on the scene late Monday. Fire officials tell 13 News they were waiting for the railroad to bring in heavy equipment to move the railroad ties so they could be fully extinguished.
So far, no word how it started.
